What is it?
Respite care services are used for the caregiver of an elderly, ill or handicapped member of the family who requires around the clock care. The caregiver
in the home can utilize these services for an hour, ½ day, full day care, or evening hours. Generally the respite care services offer the caregiver an opportunity to regroup and refresh him/herself. An hour or a day spent away from the stresses of the constant attention that the patient requires can make all the difference to a weary family member.
Several local agencies offer varying degrees of aid to families. Staffs include Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Companions, and Bath Aides. Since the trend now is toward in-home care, caregivers are more likely to become ill themselves if respite care is not utilized. Nebraska Health and Human Services has assistance programs available for those who qualify.
Where Can I Find Help?
Respite care resources can be found through the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging in the Respite Care Resource Center. Set up by funds from the State Legislature, the Respite Care Resource Center finds and reports on the types of respite care available in the Douglas/Sarpy area. Their goal is to find care for all ages and provide education for referrals. The information is compiled in a databank in Lincoln and gives the public access to resources across the state. It is a valuable tool for adult children who are concerned about care options for their parents living in Nebraska.
The second portion of the Respite Care Resource Center’s mission is to recruit both paid providers and/or volunteers for people who need them. The information will connect caregivers with access to providers who have already helped people in similar situations. Currently, Lutheran Family Services offers respite care for the mentally handicapped, and Family Friends offers care for medically fragile children.
