Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and results in nearly 10,000 deaths each year. Sun exposure is the major culprit in causing skin cancer, with 90% of all skin cancers being the result of too much sun over the years. The Nebraska Medical Association reminds you to enjoy being out in the sun, but to also take the necessary precautions to protect your skin.

Even if you are careful in the sun today, your risk for skin cancer is actually increased if you had a severe sunburn as a child. That’s why it is so important to ensure that children are protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Protecting a child now can have a long-term impact on their health throughout a lifetime. The most direct form of protection is the application of a sun screen with an SPF of 15 or higher. For extended time outdoors, the sun screen should be reapplied every two to four hours, even on cloudy days.

In addition to sun screen, there are other ways to protect your skin. Try to avoid being outside for extended periods between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you are outdoors during this time, be sure to find a place with plenty of shade to help break up the direct rays. It is helpful to keep exposed skin covered by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, yet protective, clothing. Contact your physician for more information on having safe fun in the sun.
