You are being asked to participate in a medical study. This study involves research. The purpose of this research is to compare the effectiveness and safety of buproprion when used as an aid to stop cigarette smoking. Before agreeing to participate in this research, it is important that you as well as your parent(s) or guardian have read and understand this consent form. Feel free to ask questions at any time prior to or after agreeing to participate.
Duration
The planned duration of your participation in this study is one year. If necessary, however, the study may be stopped or you may be withdrawn from the study at any time if it is in
your best interest to do so.
Description
This study will involve 40 teenagers who have admitted to smoking at least 10 cigarettes per day for the past 12 months. This study is designed to determine how effective and safe a new drug is, compared to a placebo (a tablet with no active ingredient that looks identical to the study drug) in helping you to stop smoking. The drug, buproprion (Zyban (TM) Glaxo Wellcome) has been approved for this use in adults but has not been tested in individuals 18 years of age or less.
