
Omaha Physician to Head AMA Section


(Omaha) –Gamini Soori, MD, MBA, FACP, FRCP, CPE from Omaha, Nebraska was elected to head the International Medical Graduate Section of the American Medical Association during the annual convention held recently in Chicago. The IMG Section includes over 35,000 members of the AMA representing fifteen percent of the total AMA membership. The Governing Council of the IMG Section which consists of eight elected members including a Delegate and an Alternate Delegate will be chaired by Dr. Soori. The International Medical Graduates represent approximately one fourth of the US physicians in practice and in Residency and Fellowship training. Previously, Dr. Soori has been a member of the Governing Council of the IMG section. He has been an alternate delegate to the AMA House of Delegates and to the national Commission to End Health Care Disparities.
Dr. Soori is a medical oncologist and hematologist practicing with Oncology Hematology West, P.C. in Omaha, Nebraska and is the medical director of Alegent Bergan Mercy Cancer Center and co-director of its bone marrow transplantation program. He serves as the chairman of the Network Cancer Program which consists of five cancer centers in the Alegent Health System. He has recently served as the president of the medical staff of Alegent Bergan Mercy Medical Center and is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Soori is a co-founder, past president and current principal investigator of the Missouri Valley Cancer Consortium funded by the National Cancer Institute. At the North Central Cancer Treatment Group based at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Soori serves as a member of the executive committee, novel therapeutics, health disparities and audit committees. He is an active member of the AMA, Nebraska Medical Association and Metro Omaha Medical Society. He is a co-founder and vice president of the Sri Lanka Relief Fund dedicated to the welfare of tsunami victims.
Dr. Soori is one of the national recipients of the Excellence in Medicine Award for Leadership in 2006, presented by the AMA Foundation and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. In 2004, he received the Outstanding and Exceptional Accomplishment Award from the Sri Lanka Foundation and was again honored in 2005 for the emergency medical care and humanitarian efforts provided for the tsunami victims. Dr. Soori received the Spirit of Mission award from Alegent Health System in 2005.
